Should You Join A Golf Club?

If you are a newcomer to golf or even just thinking about taking up the game then you are probably not sure where to start. I strongly believe that the easiest and best way to take up golf is to join a golf club and enmesh yourself within it.

Golf can be a difficult game to pick up on your own. Even if someone introduces you to golf and decides to become your “trainer” you had better check their credentials before you pick up their bad habits. There are many golfers out there who are only to keen to give you advice. Advice on which club to take, how to grip the club, how to address the ball, how to swing the club, how to aim, you name they will want to give you advice. However, you need to check how good they actually are. Many golfers here tips at the bar and it is these tips that are being told to you as a newcomer and as a newcomer in case you are not careful you will end up with so many tips and many of them which are complete nonsense that you can put your game back months.

That is why I tell you to join a golf club. Most golf clubs have a resident professional with their on site golf shop. These people are professionals and the advice they will give you will save you much heartache over the years. They can advise you on club selection if you have not already bought clubs. If you already have clubs they can check that they are properly set up for you and if not they can carry out any adjustments required. Professionals will also offer lessons, usually as half an hour or an hour time-scale. If you buy a batch of lessons you will most likely get a discount. During the lesson the professional will be able to teach you the correct grip, how to address the club and how to complete your swing. By starting out with professional lessons you will learn correctly from the start. If you were learning to fly a plane you would check that your instructor was qualified to teach you and not just select someone from the bar to teach you how to fly. Treat golf as learning to fly, get the correct training up front. The other plus of joining a golf club is the camaraderie If you are going out for a game of golf you will find there will always be fellow golfers who will join you for your 18 holes. Most people enjoy the social side of golf and playing a round with a fellow golf enthusiast should be a pleasurable experience.

Once you have learnt the basics you will recognise the good golfers who can help you with your game. To be honest some of the best advice I have ever had on a golf course is from two sons who are both category 1 golfers. They understand better that I do my level of ability on the golf course and when they see me trying to hit a Phil Mickelson wonder shot they are quick to bring course management to my mind and advise me on what is probably a more suitable shot for each situation.

Join a club, get some professional training and go out there and enjoy what must be the best game on the planet.

Golf Club Distances – Don’t Mess Up With The Club You Join!

In the latter case, you must possess good knowledge about your abilities and the correct golf club distance to choose for every shot. Picking the correct golf club distances would ensure that you are playing under par most of the times as you are hitting just the right distances. For the uninitiated, following are some useful tips regarding the golf club distances:

Picking the Right Club Distance is not Science

There are no defined measurements available to assist a player in picking up the correct golf club distance. The choice of the club that a person uses entirely depends on his/her experience and rough estimates. It is commonly observed that the professional players often hit long distances than amateurs and the men mostly hit the golf balls further than the women.

While such observations do suggest that it is a thinking job to pick up the correct golf club distance, they also mean that there is nothing called an incorrect golf club distance. Hence, there is no right or wrong golf club, there is only a perfect golf club depending on the persons physical abilities and requirements. To give you an example, a professional golfer might hit the ball as far as 280 – 320 yards. On the contrary, an amateur may only have the range of 195 – 205 yards.

Despite these established facts and based on regular observations, the average shot distances have been outlined as below:

Club Men Women Driver 200-230-260 150-175-200 3-wood 180-215-235 125-150-180 5-wood 170-195-210 105-135-170 2-iron 170-195-210 105-135-170 3-iron 160-180-200 100-125-160 4-iron 150-170-185 90-120-150 5-iron 140-160-170 80-110-140 6-iron 130-150-160 70-100-130 7-iron 120-140-150 65-90-120 8-iron 110-130-140 60-80-110 9-iron 95-115-130 55-70-95 PW 80-105-120 50-60-80 SW 60-80-100 40-50-60
Please be aware that the table above is not the bible for golfing purposes as different books and journals may outline their own inferences variably. Few other major factors that come into play while choosing the perfect golf club distance for a shot are the weather conditions, the wind direction, the natural landscape etc. Regular golfers can vouch for the assistance they so very often get from the favorable headwinds. This topic can be discussed for as long as one would want, however, what is important to know is that as you intensify your practice on the golf course, you will naturally get better with your choice of golf club distances.
